Merchant Marine Officers Association (MMOA, Swedish abbreviation SBF), is an independent trade union organizing catering, engineer and nautical officers within the Swedish merchant fleet and on foreign-registered ships with Swedish officers serving on board.

MMOA was one of Sweden's first trade unions. As early as in the year 1848 the first union for engineer officers was founded in Stockholm. In the year 1979 MMOA became an independent organization within The Swedish Association of Supervisors, which 1994 changed its name to Association of Managerial and Professional Staff (in Swedish Ledarna).

Among other things MMOA wants to promote economical and social interests of its members, work for an improved theoretical and practical training for maritime officers and uphold their position and status. The organization has always meant that nautical and engineer officers have an equal position. The chief engineer is the first technical officer on board - the master is the first nautical. Their educations are equal in length and scientific content. According to Swedish law the chief engineer also has the responsibility for the ship's technical operation and fire protection.

In the future the limits between nautical and technical officers will be weaker and in the long run disappear. This change puts a need for more training of today's officers in the engine and on deck.
